By encouraging students to pursue unique avenues of study, the Mignerey research group has grown rich in its diversity of interests. Trained as a nuclear chemist, Professor Mignerey’s research has strong roots in both fundamental nuclear science and also applications of nuclear techniques.
The basic nuclear science involves understanding the forces at work inside the nucleus through the extreme compression and heating of large nuclei. Experiments are performed at national and international research facilities using large particle colliders. In its focus on analytical chemistry, the Mignerey group addresses questions in fields such as environmental science and nutrition, as well as working to advance useful analytical techniques. One well established avenue of study is the use of accelerator mass spectroscopy. AMS provides excellent sensitivity to the atomic composition of a sample while all but eliminating molecular interferences.
