A Message From The Chair
The academic year 2007-2008 was a stellar year for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. New nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray diffraction, and mass spectroscopy instrumentation were delivered and installed. Two new faculty were added, and three faculty were promoted to full professor. The department found itself marching in line with the university’s Strategic Plan for elevating its standing among world class universities.
The good news about the department is being heard. In rankings of chemistry departments nationwide by U. S. News & World Report, our Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry rose another place from the previous year. The past year has seen placement of programs and people who will make a significant difference for the future of the department. There is general agreement with the direction of the department, even though some of our practices represent a departure with those of the past. External funding for the department rose over the same period the previous year, and the number of our undergraduate majors continues to grow at a remarkable pace.
Alumni, business leaders and the K-12 teaching community in our region are increasingly returning to the Department to interact with our students and faculty and to support our research and educational mission. We welcome all alumni and friends to return, to learn more about our current activities and participate the wonderful events we hold throughout the year. The discussions which include cutting-edge science and oftentimes Department nostalgia are stimulating and enjoyable for all. When alumni visit, it is likely that they see one of their former professors.
