Consideration of Sang-Bok Lee for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor was initiated and completed in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Sang-Bok is now Associate Professor and he is a great advantage to our programs in nanoscience and nanobiotechnology.   David Fushman, Lyle Isaacs, and Robert Walker were evaluated and enthusiastically put forward for promotion from Associate Professor to Professor, and their promotions further advanced the standing of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the university and world communities.

Sandra Greer, longtime faculty member of the department and joint appointee with the Department of Chemical Engineering, has left the University to become Provost of Mills College in California.  Tom Murphy, faculty member in the department since 1969, retired from the department in June 2008.

We are also happy to announce two new appointments:

Yu Huang WangYu-Huang Wang is an outstanding young scientist with strong credentials in materials chemistry who joined our faculty in a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in August, 2008.  He obtained his Ph.D. degree with Nobel Prize recipient Richard Smalley at Rice University, and he has obtained postdoctoral experience with one of this nation’s leading experts in materials chemistry, Professor Chad Mirkin at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.  His record of achievements is exceptional among those in his area of research.

Kwaku DayieKwaku Dayie began at the University of Maryland, College Park, in August 2008 as Associate Professor in a tenure-track appointment. Born in Ghana, Dr. Dayie obtained his B.S. degree from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he received distinction in graduating Magna Cum Laude.  From there he entered Harvard University and worked with Professor Gehard Wagner on structural NMR studies of proteins.  After receiving his Ph. D. degree in 1996 he joined the research group of James Williamson at The Scripps Research Institute in California where he began his successful efforts with nanoscale RNA-Protein interactions.  He then joined the staff at Cleveland Clinic from which he was hired at Maryland. He joins us as an experienced biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopist with interests in nanomaterials related to human health.

John Fourkas is Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. Herman Ammon is Associate Chair for Undergraduate Programs. Dan Falvey is Associate Chair for Facilities and Instruction. They constitute a strong interface to faculty, students, and administration.
