Gary Christian (Ph.D. Maryland, 1964) was inducted in the Circle of Discovery of the College of Chemical and Life Sciences in September 2007.  Begun only last year, the Circle of Discovery honors faculty, alums, and friends of the College who have made important scientific discoveries. A member of the department’s Committee of Distinguished Advisors (link to bio from Committee of Distinguished Advisors), Gary is Editor-in-Chief of the chemistry journal Talanta, and he has had a distinguished professional career at the University of Washington.

 

The CLFS Alumnus of the Year 2008 is Dr. Joseph Rodricks (University of Maryland M.S. degree in organic chemistry in 1963; Ph.D. degree in biochemistry in 1968) an internationally recognized expert in the field of toxicology and risk analysis, and their uses in the regulation and evaluation of toxic tort and product liability cases. Since 1980, he has consulted for hundreds of manufacturers, for government agencies and the World Health Organization, and he has served on 15 Boards and Committees of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. He has more than 200 publications on toxicology and risk analysis, and has lectured nationally and internationally on these topics. Dr. Rodricks was formerly Deputy Associate Commissioner, Health Affairs, and Toxicologist, US Food & Drug Administration (1965-1980), and is a Visiting Professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. He has been certified as a Diplomate, American Board of Toxicology, since 1982.
